Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been chosen by the Congress party to run in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Telangana. This selection comes after K Keshava Rao, a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a former MP from the Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS), decided to leave and join the Congress. The election for this by-election is set to take place on September 3, 2024.

Singhvi, who is a senior leader in the Congress party and a lawyer at the Supreme Court, has thanked the party's leadership, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and notable individuals such as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, for their backing in his bid. The Congress party is currently in a strong position in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, which is seen as an advantage for Singhvi, possibly leading to a win and boosting the party's presence in the Rajya Sabha to 27 members.

This by-election is part of a broader political contest, with 12 seats in the Rajya Sabha up for grabs across nine states, following the election of current members to the Lok Sabha. The outcome of these elections will be declared on the same day as the voting.
